Cold Steel

A photograph from my photobook Metropolight published in 2017 and distributed to over 40 countries.

This is an image from the city of Batumi in Georgia. The clouds in the sky in combination with the rays of sunlight covered the whole scene in what feels like a silver coating. At the time, the buildings were empty, and the city promised to create a university in the building on the left. Yet there was no proper infrastructure leading to the building, and it’s now been turned into a hotel with prices way outside of the reach of the ordinary people of Georgia. I imagine the two men in the photograph already sensed the false projection of a bright future.
